Biography:
Thomas Sterner is a full-time artist from Carroll County Maryland near the PA line. Growing up in Pennsylvania, he was an avid backpacker and rock climber. Earning a Bachelor of Fine Art from Kutztown University, he taught at the Wyomissing Institute of Art, and served as the master printmaker for the Art Series Program, producing etching and lithograph editions for various NYC artists. Upon moving to Maryland, he joined The Artist’s Gallery in Frederick, and served on the board of the Carroll County Arts Council. He is currently a member of NOMA Gallery in Frederick MD.
Prior to becoming a full-time artist, his employment in industry and manufacturing at Laser Applications, Inc, further developed his sense of process, discovery, and human error in his art making, although he remains firmly anchored in natural subjects. His studio, Art Factory, and residence are nestled in farmland east of Union Mills MD, where he has been making art full-time since 2015. In 2019 his focus shifted to public art, completing 19 public sculptures through 2024.
Artist’s Statement:
Portray thoughtful (sometimes humorous) ideas using varied techniques, often with unusual juxtaposition of image, action or title to prompt the viewer’s personal interpretation. The goal of his art is to make people think and smile.
